Building the healthcare of tomorrow together

Citymesh and Maria Middelares join forces to make healthcare smarter and more efficient. With the public-private 5G network (5G-PP), we enhance hospital processes, telemonitoring, medication management, and telemedicine. 5G ensures stable and reliable connectivity, fast and secure data exchange, and more efficient healthcare delivery, allowing healthcare professionals to spend more time with their patients.

This project offers start-ups and scale-ups the chance to test their healthcare innovations in a safe, realistic environment. Through collaborations with partners such as Philips, smartQare and imec.istart, they share valuable knowledge with the broader healthcare sector. This allows the hospital to optimally utilize the possibilities of technology for their patient care.

The healthcare sector is rapidly digitizing, but existing networks like WiFi are increasingly overloaded. This limits critical applications such as telemonitoring, remote care, and data exchange. With the 5G-PP project, we remove these obstacles and elevate Belgian healthcare to the next level.
Why this project?

The healthcare sector is rapidly digitizing, but existing networks like WiFi are increasingly overloaded. This limits critical applications such as telemonitoring, remote care, and data exchange. With the 5G-PP project, we remove these obstacles and elevate Belgian healthcare to the next level.

Key innovations within 5G-PP

Faster and more reliable network
5G technology ensures the presence of a particularly reliable, stable and fast network in the hospital environment

Greater network coverage
The smooth transition between the public networks and the hospital’s own 5G network plays an important part, including in monitoring via telemonitoring.

The future of healthcare, inside and outside the hospital
Healthcare extends beyond the hospital walls. The 5G-PP project enables seamless collaboration between hospitals, general practitioners, home care, and residential care centers. Thanks to 5G, medical data is always and everywhere securely and instantly accessible, regardless of the healthcare provider’s location. This ensures faster interventions, better follow-up, and high-quality care both in the hospital and at home.

Contributing to sustainable and affordable healthcare
This project also provides the 5G-PP network to startups, scale-ups, and other initiatives in (preventive) healthcare and sports, allowing them to develop and test their innovations directly. Close collaboration takes place with HealthArena, Watt The Health, and imec.istart.

A step towards more efficient care and policy development

5G-PP helps alleviate the pressure on healthcare financing through faster interventions, reliable measurements, and improved data collection. This makes the healthcare system more efficient and future-proof. The findings from this 5G pilot project will be shared with the wider healthcare sector, knowledge institutions, and other stakeholders. This will support policymakers in making informed decisions about the value of 5G technology in healthcare.

Project Updates

Thursday, February 27, 2025 – Citymesh is taking an important step towards a digital future for Belgian healthcare. In collaboration with AZ Zeno and Maria Middelares, Citymesh is exploring how 5G can contribute to more efficient healthcare processes and improved connectivity within and beyond the hospital. By testing this technology in practice, the partners aim to assess how 5G can enable faster communication, high-quality patient care, and a future-proof hospital environment.
